Google has introduced a new AI health tool. This health tool is known to help identify different skin, hair, and nail issues using AI and a smart phone camera.
Although the feature is not yet available on Android phones, the Google press release mentions, “the dermatology assist tool is a web-based application that we hope to launch as a pilot later this year, to make it easier to figure out what might be going on with your skin.”
Supported with easy-to-use features, the tool can be used in the following way:
• Depending on the concern, take three images of either the skin, nail, or hair from different angles.
• Respond to questions pertaining to the time when the issue occurred, skin type and related symptoms.
With this information, AI will further pull from a knowledge pool of 288 skin conditions to offer potential conditions to match the criteria. For each matching condition, the tool will show dermatologist-reviewed information and answers to commonly asked questions, along with similar matching images from the web. What’s more, the tool also factors in sex, race, skin type and age to derive specific results.
The tool is not intended to provide a diagnosis nor be a substitute for medical advice as many conditions require clinician review, in-person examination, or additional testing like a biopsy. Rather we hope it gives you access to authoritative information so you can make a more informed decision about your next step.
Google says it’s “fine-tuned [its] model with de-identified data encompassing around 65,000 images and case data of diagnosed skin conditions, millions of curated skin concern images and thousands of examples of healthy skin — all across different demographics.”
It is reportedly known that while the tool has received clinical validation in the EU and is ‘marked as a class I medical device’, it has not been evaluated by the US FDA for safety or efficacy.
