How Telemedicine can be the bright spot in India

Aesthetic Medicine brought the industry together from across the globe with “Aesthetic Medicine’s Virtual Week”: Five days of important information, fantastic education, inspiration and support, between May 11-15, 2020. As part of this week – which was led by Aesthetic Medicine in UK and each day broadcasting five sessions – Aesthetic Medicine India curated a panel discussion on Telemedicine on May 15.

Eminent panelists for the session included Dr Apratim Goel, CEO & Medical Director, Cutis Skin Solution; and Dr Sonia Tekchandani, Consultant Dermatologist, Tender Skin International-India and UAE. The session was moderated by Shriyal Sethumadhavan, Executive Editor, Aesthetic Medicine India.

Key takeaways from the session included:

• Health Tech is the new ‘normal’ for the practitioners. Medical council guidelines have provided its stamp of approval on Telemedicine. A great medium to connect with your patients. It is the need of the hour and a megatrend.

• Telemedicine helps in expanding the reach. It also helps in minimising patient’s initial in-clinic visits.

• Apprehensions faced by doctors with regards to the telemedicine platform are ability building rapport with patients, ability to treat the patient in real-time, chances of the diagnosis going wrong. It cannot be a total substitute for regular in-person diagnosis.

• On the client’s side, they are concerned about confidentiality and do not take online/virtual consultation seriously.

• Doctors need to ensure that the telemedicine platforms they are using are trustworthy and preserve the client’s confidential data. It is completely integrated and checks the agreement of these platforms with lawyers to avoid any mishaps.

• Future perspective: Mobile clinics, homecare devices, portable RF devices can be made available to the patient. Find a good balance between digital and in-clinic consultation.

• The discussion concluded with putting together a checklist for selecting the ideal telemedicine platform:
– Easy to use and navigate, manageable.
– Well-integrated payment gateway.
– Structured follow-ups
– Integrated prescription generating system
– Product delivery
– The option of revisiting the patients’ consulting notes
– The monetary facet
