India in top 10 for surgical and non-surgical procedures

Both surgical and nonsurgical procedures increased in 2019 (7.1 per cent and 7.6 per cent, respectively) compared to an increase only in nonsurgical procedures in 2018. Further, despite a 3.6 per cent decrease in the numbers of procedures last year, breast augmentation continued to be the most common cosmetic surgical procedure, making up 15.8 per cent of all procedures conducted. The top five most popular surgical procedures remain breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery, abdominoplasty, and rhinoplasty. The top five nonsurgical procedures also remained the same as before: Botulinum toxin, hyaluronic acid, hair removal, nonsurgical fat reduction, and photo rejuvenation.

Recently, there has been a decrease in breast augmentation procedures, considering the 20.6 per cent increase over the past five years; this could be related to issues surrounding BIA-ALCL. However, surgery to remove implants increased by 10.7 per cent in 2019. Face and head procedures increased by 13.5 per cent, compared to a 14.7 per cent decrease in the previous year; and eyelid surgery increased in popularity among men. Buttock surgery recorded the highest growth for all surgical procedures – Buttock augmentation increased by 38.4 per cent in 2019 and by 65.9 per cent since 2015; buttock lifts by 25.5 per cent in 2019 and by 77.6 per cent since 2015. Finally, labiaplasty increased by 24.1 per cent in 2019 and by 73.3 per cent since 2015.

On the other hand, nonsurgical injectables saw an increase 8.6 per cent and botulinum toxin remained the most used. The highest percentage increase was in the use of calcium hydroxyapatite, up 64.9 per cent in 2019. The use of hyaluronic acid also continued to rise and is up by 15.7 per cent since 2018. Poly-l-lactic acid and microablative procedures also increased significantly by 24.1 per cent and 34.2 per cent, respectively.

The most popular surgical procedures for women remains breast augmentation, liposuction, and eyelid surgery. For men, they are gynecomastia, eyelid surgery, and liposuction.The most popular nonsurgical procedures for men and women are botulinum toxin, hyaluronic acid, and hair removal. Women between the age group of 35-50 had the greatest number of surgical procedures: contenders for breast augmentations (53.9 per cent) and rhinoplasties (64.5 per cent) were aged between 19-34 years; botulinum toxin injectables were commonly used by the age group 35-50 (46.1 per cent of total). Rhinoplasty continues to be the most common cosmetic procedure in patients 18-years-old or younger.

USA, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Italy, Germany, Turkey, France, India, and Russia featured in the top 10 countries in the year 2019. In terms of country statistics, the USA saw an 8.7 per cent decrease in surgical procedures, but again performed the most procedures worldwide (15.9 per cent of the total), as well as 19.3 per cent of all nonsurgical procedures and 77.8 per cent of injectables.
