Traya Health has conducted a social experiment examining the relationship between hair loss and perceived attractiveness. The experiment used identical dating profiles with hair appearance as the primary variable.

Researchers created AI-generated profile images to avoid using real individuals. Each profile maintained the same bio, prompts and base image throughout testing. The researchers then compared engagement across profiles with fuller hair and visible hair loss.

Engagement showed a significant difference

The experiment recorded substantial differences in engagement between the two profile variations. The male profile featuring fuller hair received 28 likes during the experiment. The corresponding profile showing hair loss received no likes. The difference was more pronounced for the female profile.

The fuller-hair version received approximately 2,300 likes during the experiment. The hair-loss version received around 50 likes over the same period.

Traya said the findings demonstrate how hair appearance can influence initial perceptions of attractiveness. The company also linked these perceptions to broader associations involving age, health and vitality.

Research links hair with health perceptions

Traya’s findings draw on research examining hair’s role in perceptions of age and physical health. Dr Rashi Soni, consultant at Traya, said hair contributes to immediate visual impressions.

Androgenetic alopecia remains the most common form of patterned hair loss. Genetic predisposition and sensitivity to androgens can contribute to its development. Nutritional factors can also influence hair health and hair loss. These include deficiencies involving nutrients such as vitamin D, iron and zinc.

Traya said understanding these factors provides greater context around hair loss beyond its cosmetic impact. The company positioned hair as a feature that can influence perceptions of health and vitality.

Evolutionary science offers another perspective

Traya also examined hair loss through the lens of evolutionary psychology. Evolutionary theories suggest that people may respond to visible characteristics associated with health and vitality.

The company said these responses can influence perceptions before conscious evaluation occurs. However, the experiment does not establish hair as a determining factor in attraction or relationships. Instead, Traya presented the findings as evidence of hair’s potential influence on initial perceptions.
