Oral sunscreens gain interest but SPF remains crucial

Oral sunscreens gain interest but SPF remains crucial

India’s extreme heat and frequent heatwaves from March to June increasingly threaten skin health, raising serious concerns. High temperatures combined with intense sunlight increase the risk of skin problems like sunburn, rashes, and eczema. In response, many are turning to oral sunscreens alongside traditional methods to help protect their skin during these harsh months.

Protecting skin during these months is essential and requires a combination of hydration, appropriate clothing, limited sun exposure, and effective use of sunscreen.

Oral sunscreens

In recent years, oral sunscreens—available as gummies, powders, or drinks—have gained popularity as an alternative to traditional topical sun protection. These products are often marketed as easy, convenient solutions that protect the skin from the inside out. However, it’s important to understand how they work and their limitations.

Oral sunscreens typically contain antioxidants, vitamins, and plant extracts. These ingredients support skin health by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation caused by UV exposure. While these ingredients may provide some benefits, oral supplements do not block or filter UV rays the way topical sunscreens do. Creams and lotions create a physical or chemical barrier that shields skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Oral sunscreens, however, provide only indirect protection.

Why they can’t replace topical protection

Relying solely on oral sunscreens without applying topical sunscreen leaves the skin vulnerable to sun damage. This increases the risk of burns, premature aging, and other long-term skin issues. Oral supplements complement skincare routines but should never replace the regular application of broad-spectrum sunscreen.

To stay safe during intense Indian summers, apply sunscreen generously and reapply every two hours when spending time outdoors. Pair this with protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and staying in the shade whenever possible.

Skin health

The idea of “drinking sunscreen” may sound appealing to some. However, no supplement provides the proven protection of a good SPF cream.  Keeping skin healthy in extreme heat requires a balanced approach, combining smart habits and scientifically backed sun protection methods.
