A person dealing with rosacea, representing the rising skin conditions in India.
Discover the alarming rise of skin conditions in India and the contributing factors behind this trend.

Is it not true that in today’s social media world, skin conditions are a matter of concern? Recently Indian dermatologists have noticed a significant rise in different skin conditions such as fungal infections, acne, pigmentations and hair loss.

All of these skin problems need to be treated right away. Any carelessness can make dermatological issues more severe.

Reasons behind the rise

The increase in skin conditions is caused by multiple factors:

  • Pollution:

Living in areas with high levels of air pollution can lead to skin issues. For example: clogged pores, irritation, and increased instances of acne and other dermatological problems.

  • Climatic change:

Dermatological conditions such as acne, fungal infections, and hair root infections are mostly brought on by high temperatures and air pollution. When skin is exposed to these conditions, it takes in more dirt and dust, which causes such issues.

  • Lifestyle and diet:

Acne and hair loss are symptoms of more general issues, including unhealthy eating, stress, and a lack of physical activity. These problems are made worse by not getting enough vitamins and minerals, especially iron and B12.

  • Misuse of OTC products: Nowadays, many people increasingly use OTC creams and serums blindly, without consulting a professional, which could worsen any skin conditions.

The connection between climatic change and steroids

According to Dr Sonali Kohli, a consultant Dermatologist at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, the changing climate is a major cause of fungal skin conditions. Another thing that has made the condition worse is the improper use of over-the-counter(OTC) creams especially those that contain steroids.

She added that even though these creams may offer quick relief but can make infections more difficult to treat.

The dangers of self-medication

The Chief Dermatologist at AAYNA Clinics and Chief Medical Officer at Clinikally, Dr Simal Soin warn against excessive steroid use. Nowadays, many people self-medicate with steroids they get from pharmacies, which can lead to misuse.

Moreover, directly applied steroids may trigger infections and fungal skin conditions causing thinning of skin and stretch marks. So, it is very important that dermatologist recommend steroids and that they be used under their direct supervision.

Advancements in the field of skin aesthetics

Due to rising demand and awareness for procedures like Botox and medical facials, the skin aesthetics market has experienced outstanding expansion. Anti-ageing and dealing with problems like acne scars and colour are getting more attention.

Moreover, the market for weight loss treatments is blooming. There are now a lot of different choices for cosmetic treatments, from Medi facials to more advanced procedures. In aesthetics, the focus is shifting to a more proactive and wide-ranging approach.

Final say

It’s very important to understand the various factors that affect skin health, like genes, environment, and personal lifestyle choices. Through individual analysis and professional recommendations, people can make proactive efforts.

One should always take control and improve their skin health in the face of modern environmental and lifestyle influences.
