Apart from making activities such as combing hair an excruciating task, hair loss severely affects the confidence of a person. It mars his/her perception of one’s personality and impacts social behaviour. Dr Batul Patel, Medical Director and Dermatologist, The Bombay Skin Clinic, tells us about the causes and possible treatments for hair loss.
Know the cause
Hair Loss typically means shedding of hair or excessive loss of hair i.e. more than 100 hair per day. It can affect anyone and can occur any age. It can be caused by many factors like hereditary, hormonal issues, stress, dietary deficiency, medical conditions or due to some drugs. It can affect just your scalp or sometimes entire body. And it could be temporary or permanent, depending on the reason behind it.
Depending on the type of hair loss, there are various treatment options available. For the correct treatment plan, there are few tests, which helps the doctor to correctly diagnose the root causes. Various home remedies and medications can be tried for early stage patients. Others may require procedures or surgery depending on their grades. There are various options available for hair loss treatment at The Bombay Skin Clinic combining both medications and procedures. We do nutrition therapy, PRP, Regenera activa, hair transplant, dermaroller and laser light therapies.
Let us look at some of the popular hair loss treatments in detail:
It is a single session procedure where a small skin sample is taken from the patient and processed through the US FDA approved kit. We get the fluid, which is rich in cellular contents necessary for hair growth. This is then injected in the scalp. This is a very advanced technique and results are visible in 3 – 6 weeks.
It is procedure where we take blood from the patient and centrifuge it to obtain growth factors necessary for hair growth. This is then injected in the scalp. We use US FDA approved PRP tubes, which gives very good results.
Based on the detail history of the patient and deficiencies, various vitamins and minerals are prescribed in a combo pack by our dermatologist.
In this procedure small micropunctures are made over the scalp using minute micro needles. This releases growth factors, which helps in hair growth.
Laser light of a particular wavelength goes inside the scalp and stimulates circulation and release of growth factors for hair.
This is a surgical procedure, which involves Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and transplantation, which is done for few patients who don’t benefit from other mentioned therapies.
Hair loss is a treatable ailment, provided its cause and extent is properly diagnosed. Seeking timely medical help will greatly affect the hair loss process.
