Chandigarh’s Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector‑32 (GMCH‑32) has launched an advanced power-assisted liposuction (PAL) service. The new procedure provides patients with a precise and minimally invasive option for body contouring. The new technique improves results, shortens recovery, and reduces complications compared with GMCH‑32’s previous manual liposuction.
Why GMCH‑32 introduced PAL
Dr Samik Sharma, GMCH‑32 plastic surgery consultant, said GMCH‑32 introduced PAL due to growing awareness of fat disorders and patient demand. They recognised the need for a safer, more efficient liposuction method that ensures consistent results with minimal tissue trauma. He explained that PAL employs a specialised device helping surgeons remove fat precisely while limiting damage to surrounding tissues.
Patient profile and benefits
The hospital’s plastic surgery department evaluates 40–50 patients monthly for liposuction, mostly targeting stubborn fat unresponsive to diet and exercise. With PAL now available, patients experience reduced blood loss, less pain, and faster recovery. It also delivers more uniform fat removal, improving results compared to the traditional manual liposuction at GMCH‑32.
The new facility benefits a broad age range, with most patients between 25 and 60 years old, depending on their overall health and skin quality. The procedure targets persistent fat in the abdomen, waist, thighs, arms, back, chin, neck, and male chest affected by gynaecomastia. PAL is not designed as a weight‑loss solution; rather, it works best for contouring specific regions that resist conventional weight‑loss efforts.
Importance of patient selection and lifestyle
Dr Sharma stressed that careful patient selection remains critical. Individuals with severe obesity, poor skin elasticity, uncontrolled medical conditions, or unrealistic expectations for the procedure are not suitable candidates. He emphasised that maintaining a balanced lifestyle with regular exercise, a healthy diet, adequate sleep, and stress management prevents fat accumulation. He added that these habits also help patients sustain their liposuction results after surgery.
Hospital outlook and educational efforts
Hospital officials anticipate that 20 to 30 patients will undergo PAL in the coming months. GMCH‑32 highlighted the new service’s benefits and published a myths-versus-facts guide to correct common liposuction misconceptions. The guide stresses that liposuction does not serve as a weight-loss solution and cannot replace diet or exercise. It adds that, when performed by qualified surgeons in proper clinical settings, liposuction provides a safe, effective option for targeted body contouring.
