The Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists (IADVL) welcomes a new order regulating aesthetics and hair transplant clinics in Tamil Nadu. The order aims to improve patient safety and address concerns about unqualified practitioners performing cosmetic procedures.
Regulation for a growing industry
The Health and Family Welfare Department of Tamil Nadu issued the order to regulate cosmetology, aesthetic treatment, and hair transplant clinics statewide. Authorities want to standardise operations in a fast-growing industry with limited oversight.
Under the order, aesthetic clinics must register under the Tamil Nadu Clinical Establishments (Regulation) Act. The law governs medical establishments across the state. The regulation requires clinics to meet specific medical standards and maintain adequate infrastructure.
Clinics must also follow hygiene protocols and maintain proper patient records.
Concerns over unqualified practitioners
IADVL said the decision addresses rising concerns about untrained individuals offering complex cosmetic procedures. Dermatologists have repeatedly warned about serious complications from poorly performed treatments.
Hair transplantation, laser procedures, and injectable treatments require specialised training and strict medical protocols. Experts stress that these procedures should not be treated as routine beauty services.
The association emphasised that cosmetic procedures involve medical risk and require trained healthcare professionals. Qualified doctors must evaluate patients and perform procedures in appropriate clinical settings.
Clear guidelines for medical procedures
The order clarifies that only registered medical practitioners can perform advanced aesthetic procedures. Dermatologists and plastic surgeons usually possess the necessary training for such treatments.
Non-medical staff or technicians cannot perform these procedures under the new guidelines. The rule aims to prevent unsafe treatments and reduce malpractice in the sector.
Authorities will inspect clinics to ensure compliance with licensing and operational standards. Facilities that fail to meet requirements could face penalties or closure.
Growing demand for cosmetic treatments
Officials believe the regulation will improve transparency and accountability in the aesthetic treatment industry. The move may also increase patient confidence in cosmetic healthcare services.
Demand for cosmetic procedures has grown rapidly in recent years. Treatments such as fillers, botulinum toxin injections, and hair restoration procedures are increasingly popular.
However, experts warn that unregulated clinics can expose patients to infection, scarring, or other medical complications. Proper regulation can significantly reduce such risks.
IADVL welcomes the regulation and also urges strict enforcement of the new rules. The association believes consistent monitoring will help eliminate unethical practices in cosmetic medicine.
Medical professionals say the order marks a significant step toward safer aesthetic healthcare in Tamil Nadu. The regulation strengthens patient protection while supporting professional medical standards.
