Actress Shefali Jariwala’s recent and untimely passing away has brought the medical and aesthetic communities closer together to learn and improve patient care. The exact cause is still under investigation. However, news reports have highlighted the growing use of unregulated IV glutathione treatments and anti-ageing supplements.
This is a wake-up call for dermatologists, aesthetic doctors, and wellness experts. One must raise awareness, promote safe treatments, and protect patients from risks. The industry needs to unite around safety, science, and expert care. Concerning this incident, Dr Madhuri Agarwal, Founder of Yavana Skin and Hair Clinic, used her Instagram reel to spread awareness.
The role of experts
Dr Madhuri Agarwal said, “This has opened a necessary conversation about unregulated beauty treatments, self-medication, and chasing that glow without medical supervision. In my 20 years as a dermatologist, I’ve never prescribed an ‘anti-ageing pill’ because they generally don’t exist.” This highlights the need for proper medical checks and ongoing supervision.
Skincare and aesthetic treatments should be customised, prescribed by trained doctors, and based on science, not influenced by trends or unverified online claims.
The reality behind popular quick fixes
IV glutathione and anti-ageing pills are often promoted as quick solutions for fairer, younger-looking skin. However, for skincare professionals, it is important to highlight that these treatments carry risks.
Dr Madhuri said, “IV glutathione is marketed as a fairness treatment, but let me tell you, it is not FDA approved in India for cosmetic use. People are taking high doses like 10,000 or 20,000 mg every second day, and this can seriously harm your body.”
She added, “You don’t know what’s going into these pills like collagen boosters, hormones, unapproved ingredients and how they’re affecting your liver, heart, or kidneys.” So, experts must address the serious concern of self-medication responsibly.
Building awareness and trust in professional care
Shefali Jariwala’s incident is a reminder for the industry to focus more on patient education, clear rules, and honest practices. Professionals need to work together to ensure every treatment offered is safe, trustworthy, and effective.
