Innovations in dermatological treatments with Dr Aseem Sharma, exploring the latest advancements in skin boosters, fillers, and lasers.

There’s no doubt that innovative advancements in the aesthetics industry have influenced our approach to dermatological treatments. Instead of just lifting and filling, the focus is now on enhancing the quality of the skin with cutting-edge technologies.

Dr Aseem Sharma, Consultant Dermatologist at Skin Saga, gives a glimpse into this new era of aesthetics. From advanced skin boosters to cutting-edge lasers, each new invention holds a different promise for elevating beauty and boosting confidence.

On trending treatments:

In the last couple of years, many new treatments have come along. Some of them have changed the game and some are still finding their footing in the Indian aesthetic industry. I am going to divide the skin treatments into a few subheadings.

  • Skin Boosters:

We are now focusing on the quality of the skin instead of simply lifting, filling and forming of the skin. In skin quality, the prime treatment is skin boosters, which are low cohesivity or partially cross-linked along with the cuticulitis.

For this, we have moved a step ahead of plain hyaluronic acid (HA)-based boosters. Now, there are additives such as PDRN, which is derived from salmon sperm, which is a very good remodeler as well. So, we are getting good results with PDRN filters.

In threads, we have moved from simple cork threads to double-needle threads and threads that can incorporate alginate acid spheres.

  • Fillers:

There are multiple players in the market for fillers, giving practitioners various choices for cohesivity and elasticity. This allows us to choose our devices and products for different problem areas such as tear trough, lips, mid-face, upper face, jawline or neck.

In terms of devices, the one game changer in the last five years has been HiFu. High-intensity focused ultrasound has taken away the worries of ageing Indians.

As Indians, we lack good jawlines, which is worse in women above the age of 40. HiFu gives great results with or without cryolipolysis or injection lipolysis, enabling clients to sport a chiselled jawline for years to come.

  • Lasers:

Lasers have evolved dramatically. A two-switch laser or pigmentary laser has a pulse duration in picoseconds (also called pico lasers), so, they do not damage the skin.

The pulses are more quality controlled where you know you are using the photoacoustic effects of a laser to destroy monocytes. Rather engaging the photothermal effects that a conventional tube switch does.

So, our lasers are getting safer and more coherent, more targeted, and more optimal. So, we can use higher energies, and give results faster with a safe backdrop.

  • Radiofrequency (RF):

This has undergone a sea change from the original monopolar, bipolar and multipolar probes, we now have subdative RF, subsistence RF and fractional RF.

A bulk heating device like an RF machine can now deliver a fractional grid without needles. Fractional RF is again something that I have been using often in my practice.

  • Body contouring:

This has become a separate niche market with clients coming in for EMS devices and cryolipolysis. About six years ago, people were more focused on the face, but now they have become much more body-conscious.
