The landscape of facial plastic surgery is undergoing a noticeable transformation, driven partly by the rising use of weight-loss medications. The 2024 survey by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) highlights significant shifts in aesthetic preferences. Traditional procedures like rhinoplasties, facelifts (including partial facelifts), and blepharoplasties continue to dominate the field. However, fat grafting procedures have increased by 50%, as more patients seek to restore facial volume lost from rapid weight reduction, or “Ozempic face.”
Facial plastic surgeons are increasingly encountering patients looking for solutions to counteract the effects of extreme weight loss. While surgical interventions remain popular, many individuals are turning to minimally invasive treatments. One in four surgeons anticipates a rise in demand for nonsurgical options such as injectable fillers and skin-tightening procedures.
The expanding role of regenerative medicine
Beyond traditional surgical and nonsurgical methods, regenerative medicine is poised to play a crucial role in aesthetic enhancement. Fifty-seven percent of facial plastic surgeons anticipate increased use of advanced treatments like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy and exosome-based solutions. These innovations enhance skin rejuvenation and wound healing, offering patients advanced options to improve natural features and maintain a youthful appearance.
Rising popularity of male aesthetic procedures
Another noteworthy trend is the increasing number of men seeking cosmetic treatments. 92% of facial plastic surgeons reported a rise in male patients pursuing procedures such as blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty, and facelifts. This uptick reflects a broader cultural shift, with more men embracing aesthetic enhancements as part of their self-care routines. Male patients increasingly choose nonsurgical treatments, favouring neurotoxins, fillers, and skin therapies as their top aesthetic enhancement options. Men are recognising the benefits of aesthetic treatments and are becoming more open to exploring cosmetic enhancements.
The future of facial plastic surgery
As weight-loss medications continue to gain traction, their influence on the aesthetics industry is expected to grow. Both surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures are evolving in response to the changing needs of patients experiencing dramatic weight loss. Facial plastic surgery adapts to a shifting landscape by using fat grafting, regenerative medicine, and noninvasive treatments.
