Global aesthetic report 2024: Eyelid surgery tops charts

According to the latest ISAPS Global Aesthetic Report 2024, demand for aesthetic treatments is growing like never before. The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) reported that nearly 38 million procedures were done worldwide in 2024. This included 17.4 million surgical and 20.5 million non-surgical treatments. In the last four years, this represents a 42.5 per cent increase.

Eyelid surgery now more popular than liposuction

For the first time, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) became the world’s most popular surgical procedure in 2024. A total of 2.1 million procedures were done, marking a 13.4 per cent increase from last year.

Liposuction, once the top choice, now stands second. Other common surgeries include breast augmentation, scar revision, and rhinoplasty. Interest in facial fat grafting also grew strongly, with a 19.2 per cent increase.

The non-surgical trends

Non-surgical treatments are more popular than ever. Botulinum toxin led the market with 7.8 million procedures, followed closely by hyaluronic acid fillers, also at 7.8 million. Hair removal, skin tightening, and chemical peels complete the top five treatments.

Botulinum toxin remains the top choice for all age groups, while younger people (18 to 34 years) prefer surgeries like rhinoplasty and breast augmentation. Liposuction and non-surgical fat reduction are equally popular across age ranges.

Focus shifts to facial treatments

Overall, facial procedures grew by 4.3 per cent globally. While body procedures saw a dip, facial treatments like eyelid surgery and fat grafting gained momentum. This shows that people are now focusing more on minimally invasive ways to enhance their faces.

Why this matters for India

While countries like the US, Brazil, and Japan lead in treatment numbers, India has massive potential. India’s young population and rising interest in beauty treatments create a big opportunity for aesthetic professionals. They can focus on expanding facial treatments, offering advanced non-surgical services, and educating clients about safe and ethical practices.

Time for Indian practitioners to act

India’s aesthetic industry needs to act now to take advantage of this global aesthetic transformation. Doctors and clinics need to focus more on training in facial surgeries and injectable treatments like Botox and fillers. Offering personalised solutions that appeal to younger clients can help meet the rising demand.

At the same time, adopting the latest non-surgical technologies can make treatments safer and more effective. Creating awareness about safe and ethical aesthetic practices will also help build trust among clients. With these steps, India’s next big growth in the aesthetic field could very well begin with facial treatments.
